More than 300 automobiles of 50-plus brands were on display, including passenger cars, business vehicles, buses and new energy vehicles. With a high starting point and extensive influence in China and Asia, the Macau Auto Show is the largest international expo in Macau. The 2011 Macau Auto Show brought together 145,000 visitors, more than 100 media organizations, and over 400 reporters from China and abroad. The number of exhibited brands, exhibition area, requirements for booths, and the number of visitors all hit a record high in the history of Macau’s exhibition industry.

The event received strong support from the Macau SAR Government, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), and State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC). The opening ceremony was attended by Fernando Chui Sai On, Chief Executive of Macau, Edmund Ho Hau Wah, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Bai Zhijian, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, Hu Zhengyue, Commissioner of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macau, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, Secretary for Economy and Finance of Macau, Su Bo, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, and Huang Shu, Vice Chairman of SASAC. Gu Xiulian, former Vice Chairman of the National People’s Congress, was also present at the passionate and dynamic event.

The auto show drew much attention from domestic and foreign automakers and dealers based in Hong Kong and Macau, and attracted a galaxy of car brands. The event featured the super luxury vehicle hall, imported vehicle hall, Chinese vehicle hall, and auto parts and accessory hall. All of them brought together renowned brands in the specific field and demonstrated the scientific and technological achievements of the world’s auto industry and the glorious history of China’s auto industry over the past 62 years.

A highlight of the auto show, the super luxury vehicle hall featured luxury brands like Bugatti, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Spyker, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati. Bugatti exhibited a sports car priced at RMB 39 million in the Chinese mainland, which was the fastest and the most expensive in the world and became a magnet of the hall and even the expo.

The imported vehicle hall dedicated to local car dealers brought together international brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Nissan, Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and Kia. All car dealers were satisfied with the expo, saying that it had lived up to expectations.

The Chinese vehicle hall witnessed the largest overseas debut with the most brands of Chinese automobile companies. The brands exhibited included China FAW, Dongfeng, GAC, Geely, Beiqi Foton, JAC, MG, Chery, Great Wall, Shaanxi Automobile and Yutong, demonstrating to visitors from all over the world the development achievements of China’s auto industry over the past 62 years.

The auto parts and accessory hall attracted about 300 auto parts producers and marked the first time Chinese auto parts enterprises made debut in Macau as a whole. More than 1,000 professional purchasers from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Portuguese-speaking countries and South Asia also came to the hall.

During the auto show, a variety of thematic events and activities were also held, such as the Asia Pacific Auto Summit and China Manufacturing Internationalization Forum, 2011 China (Macau) Auto Finance Forum and Chinese Auto Company Reputation Index Launch Ceremony, Exhibition on 62-Year Development Achievements of China’s Auto Industry, Trumpchi Cup Macau Auto Show Golf Friendly Competition, lucky draw, photograph contest, children’s drawing competition, auto showgirls body painting and Hong Kong supermodels’ auto show tour, delivering a rich experience and presenting a stunning visual feast to media and visitors.

With quality and resourceful exhibitions, the auto show not only drew attention from media based in Hong Kong and Macau, but also won recognition and support from mainstream media of the Chinese mainland such as CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, Economic Daily, China Automotive News, Nanfang Metropolis Daily, and Guangzhou Daily.

In addition to the solid work of the organizers, the inaugural Macau Auto Show owed its success to the extensive efforts of the Macau Convention & Exhibition Association (MCEA), Macau Fair & Trade Association, the Association of Advertising Agents of Macau, and Macau Hoteliers & Innkeepers Association in the organization, promotion and planning, hospitality services and the like. The expo brought a multitude of customers to The Venetian and other hotels and also gave a boost to the retail, catering, entertainment, telecommunications and insurance industries, reflecting the driving role of the convention and exhibition industry. The success of the auto show suggests that the initiative to moderately diversify Macau’s economy has come into play, ushering in a new development stage for Macau’s convention and exhibition industry.
