Organized by Nam Kwong Group jointly with the World Cultural Forum (Taihu, China) and Macau Economic Service, the High-level Conference on the Protection and Development of Global Traditional Medicine Culture 2014 (Macau) was held at the Sheraton Grand Macau Hotel on November 13 and 14, 2014. The opening ceremony was addressed by Fernando Chui Sai On, Chief Executive of Macau, and Li Gang, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, attended the ceremony. Chen Zhu, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Kong Sam Ol, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, Secretary for Economy and Finance of Macau, and Xu Kaicheng, Chairman of Nam Kwong Group. Wang Guoqiang, Administrator of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China, delivered a keynote speech. About 1,000 medical experts, scientists and officials from nearly 20 countries and regions attended the conference. The event received generous support from the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China, State Food and Drug Administration, China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, and Macau Economic Service.

In recent years, global environmental problems such as climate change and environmental pollution have mounted, and human health has been under new threats in addition to traditional ones. The purpose of the high-level conference was to tap into the advantages and potential of traditional medicine, and promote the innovative development of traditional medicine, modern medicine, medical concepts and medical modes to safeguard human health. Themed “Innovating and Developing Global Traditional Medicine, Marching Toward a New Era of Ecological Advancement”, the conference featured three parallel sessions, a lecture on regimen by masters of traditional Chinese medicine, a high-level dialogue, and a high-level seminar. The Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Medicine Products was also held, demonstrating precious medicinal materials like ginseng, lucid ganoderma, gastrodia elata, pseudo-ginseng, and tendril-leaved fritillary bulb.

Macau boasts advantages in traditional medicine. The government has attached high importance to the development of traditional medicine, taken measures to support education and research on traditional Chinese medicine and its industrial development, and signed the traditional medicine cooperation agreement with the World Health Organization on the training of traditional medicine talents. In addition, local research institutes, universities, and associations are enthusiastic about traditional Chinese medicine and its research. The high-level conference on traditional medicine, which took place prior to the 15th anniversary of Macau’s return to China, was expected to take advantage of Macau’s feature as a blend of Chinese and Western cultures and its connection with Portuguese-speaking countries, Southeast Asia and Europe, strengthen its communication and exchanges with the Chinese mainland and the international community, accelerate the development of Macau’s traditional Chinese medicine industry and promote the moderate diversification of its economy with the support from the central government and the government of Macau.
